Referencing Arts and Crafts styling, an exterior makeover rebuilt the porch columns and bases. When Boston interior designer Nina Farmer first spoke to the new owners of a 1904 English Arts and Crafts–style house in Winchester, just north of the city, the prospective clients had only a few relatively minor alterations in mind. A young couple with three school-age children, they knew they wanted to redo the dated but not original kitchen, and they needed to reorganize the master suite to enlarge the bathroom and closets. But they weren’t sure about doing anything else, and the project ultimately didn’t go anywhere. Craftsman homes may have first gained popularity on the West Coast at the beginning of the 20th century, but today the thoughtful style is popular throughout the United States.

Exterior and gardens

This preference for homegrown architecture partly explains why the Arts & Crafts style is so varied. The third floor was planned as a billiard room but was used as an attic by the Gamble family. The Gamble family crest, a crane and trailing rose, was integrated in part or whole in many locations around the house.

Cheerful patterns offer a warm welcome in the entry, thanks in part to a custom wall treatment by local design studio SheShe. Vintage swivel chairs have been freshly reupholstered in House of Hackney’s Rainbow Rose Dusk Stripe fabric, and a 1960s Italian Mother of Pearl light fixture hangs overhead. First of all, Arts & Crafts isn’t really a single style; it’s an intellectual approach to many styles.

Stickley was no purist, but he urged the use of handmade decorations, from pottery to silver to textiles—even made by the homeowners themselves. Tastemakers and social critics like England’s William Morris shuddered at the sight of it. “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful,” Morris urged his readers. Well-designed, handcrafted objects were admirable; factory goods were an abomination. The 1901 Davenport House in River Forest, Illinois, was designed during Frank Lloyd Wright’s brief, little-known partnership with Webster Tomlinson, and resembles several other early Wright houses. In the Midwest, which was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, the homes that have a Craftsman likeness are in line with the more horizontal Prairie style.

The importance of doors and windows

A garden of more than 100 plant species complements the Craftsman-style architecture. Craftsman bungalows can share many of the characteristics of cottage-style homes.
